Teddy was the grandfather that I never knew but always wanted to. Ever since I was a young teen and my mom showed me an old photobooth picture of him and his Elvis-like haircut, and another picture where he rented dozens of baby chicks so my mom and her sister could play in the front yard with them one Easter. How adorable and cute is that? How many men would do that for their daughters? A very kind, sensitive man who values the wonders of childhood and the more sincere things in life, that’s who!
He survived the Hungarian Revolution and sought peace in America. He was so young when he came to NY, about 19 or 20. He must have lived through some things I cannot imagine. What I do know is the first woman he married, my grandmother, is a hard woman to love or be around, but he tried. I do not blame him for leaving our family and being afraid to reunite with any of his children and grandchildren. Doubt is a virus that marinates us all in fear…afraid to reach out to the ones we love from afar because…what if our worst nightmare (that we aren’t missed or loved) is true? It was a shame this doubt polluted his heart for so long.
What I do know recently is some stories about him from his long time friend who was kind enough to reach out to me to inform us of his passing. These stories make sad that I missed the time with him but happy to know we most definitely would have gotten along if we had known each other.
My grandfather is described as being a very gentle, very loving man. I know I get my generosity from my mother, now I know she got her big, kind heart from him.
He had pilates equipment in house – I had a fit grandpa! We could have exercised together!
My grandfather thought anything could be fixed with duct tape – he was obviously resourceful and eager to help whenever he could!
He won trivia nights with his friends!
He owned businesses!
He must have been so adaptive and intelligent to come to a new country, learn the language, open businesses AAAAND ace the culture’s trivia games! All while maintaining his gentle and open nature towards others.
I would say rest in peace, but those who knew Teddy knew he liked to be active and social, he loved being around people. So Nagyapa, I hope wherever you are, you are surrounded by all the joy and fun and adventure your spirit can handle.
Love,
your youngest granddaughter,
Kristina
