My condolences to the family, Sal was a dear friend and we shared many good times growing up in the neighborhood. We play baseball together, share our children’s good times with Ro and the boys as they grew up.
He will always be in my prayers.
May he rest in peace
Carmela Messina says
Sooo very sorry for your loss. Sal and Roe were very special to me and Joe. We go way back to our teenage years and spent a lot of time together. The most exciting time was when Sal caught Maris’ homer. That was great. And to share that time with him was fun. Sal was the happiest person in the world and sharing that experience with the baseball world was amazing. Sal u were one of a kind and will be missed. May he Rest In Peace and I’m sure mom was happy to see him. God bless. ❤️🙏❤️🙏

Sal was my daughter Alexa’s bus driver for a year (2011-2012). He took her back and forth from Brooklyn , to the Seton Foundation for the Disabled on Staten Island every day. My daughter has always needed a little extra care , as she has Down Syndrome, and Sal was the perfect guy for the job. I knew in the first minutes talking to him that this is a genuine good guy. MLB did well to have a guy like Sal catch Roger Maris’s ball (when spoke to me, could not speak highly enough about the goodness of Roger and the Maris family).
So sorry for your loss , God bless Sal and God bless Sal’s family.

Prayers to you my friend and all your family. Your dad can be with mom now and watch all those homers from Heaven. God Bless and rest in peace.

I met SAL DURANTE sometime in 1991at his home in Brooklyn , New York – which was the year of the 30th anniversary of him catching the famous ROGER MARIS 61st home run in 1961 – I was then living in Whitestone , (Queens) New York at the time and was visiting my friends the Califano family in Bensonhurst – I found his number in the phone book – and called him – he said come on over – I remember walking around and being lost in the area and finally got to the Durante’s home where Sal himself answered the door – As I shook hands with him I noticed to my right on the wall a photo of Sal and Roger Maris taken on October 1st 1961 the day of the famous home run record breaking day at Yankee Stadium – I will always remember how kindly Sal Durante treated me like he knew me as though I was a friend from long ago – wow what a great afternoon that was – Joe Nania a.k.a. “Hollywood” Joe
