Bernice Dietrich, 102, Native Staten Islander Lived Life to the Fullest
Bernice Dietrich, a native Staten Islander, died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 11, 2022. She had just celebrated her 102nd birthday. Born in the old Staten Island Hospital on Castleton Ave, Bernice spent some of her childhood in Connecticut before returning to Staten Island as a young girl. She lived in Travis, enjoying the parades and events there, and finally settled in Port Richmond. She graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1938 and married her sweetheart, Henry Dietrich, on September 28, 1941.
Bernice was kind, generous, knowledgeable and loved people, travel, and spending time with her family and her dog, Hadley. She was a devoted New Jersey Devils fan, having attended more than 100 games, even riding on the Zamboni machine on her 98th birthday when she was honored by players and fans.
Bernice was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, where she ran the Seniors Group for many years. She was a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) and supported many charities including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Arbor Day Foundation.
She is predeceased by her husband Henry and survived by her four children: Carol Rasmussen, and her husband, George; Paul Dietrich, and his wife, Heather: Steven Dietrich, and his wife, Susan; and David Dietrich. She was loving grandmother to Eric and his husband Bobby, Jason, Kris and her husband Scott, , Amanda and her husband Mark, Melissa and her wife Kaylan, Rebecca and her husband Daniel, Marc and his wife Ashley, and Jeffrey,; and great-grandmother to Breanna, Mallarie, Bailey, Emma, Luke, Arianna, Andrea, Bennett, Sawyer and Kody.
The family wishes to thank Margaret of Safeharbor Health Care for her care in Bernice’s later years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Services are being handled by Cherubini McInerney Funeral Home. Visiting hours will be Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be at Blessed Sacrament at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
