Jennifer Anne Steed, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, sadly left our world on Monday, July 1st, 2024.
Jennifer was born on July 19, 1975 in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Staten Island. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy High School in 1993 and then went on to attend the State University of New York in Albany where she was a member of the crew team and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology. She would later go on to attain a Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University.
Known for her kindness, compassion, and humanity, Jennifer lived her life in service to others as a Social Worker for various NYC Agencies, including the Administration for Children Services, the FDNY and the NYPD. She dedicated her life to helping people cope during the worst moments of their lives and worked tirelessly to ease their pain and suffering as much as she could. No matter how difficult her job could be at times, Jenn always managed to keep her head held high, be a calm presence, and try to bring a smile to others with her wicked sense of humor. She was the eldest daughter of four girls and devoted to her mother and father, whom she shared a deep friendship with in their later years. To her sisters and girlfriends, she could always be counted on to lend a sympathetic ear, encouragement and sound advice.
Jenn was an avid traveler who traveled far and wide throughout her life. She made the journey to her parent’s homeland of Ireland at the ripe old age of 2 and never slowed down. During high school summers, she worked as a nanny in Europe touring France and Italy with her three young charges in tow. While working towards her Master’s Degree she completed an internship in South Africa that focused on supporting disadvantaged youth. Some of her favorite holiday destinations included Palau and the Caribbean for scuba diving and upstate New York for skiing, but Australia always held the most special place in her heart.
Jenn was always up for an adventure – whether it be a last-minute trip to a far-flung country, a quick jaunt to Atlantic City or trying out a new eclectic restaurant in town. She could be a bit of a homebody at times and to unwind she enjoyed crafting and creating personalized gifts for friends and family. Jennifer had an eye for the exquisite – and you could be assured that those carefully chosen Christmas and birthday gifts would be presented as works of art, almost too beautiful to open. Jenn loved a good music festival, nights out with friends, cozy blankets, the beach and her grumpy pup, Maisie.
The loss of Jennifer has left a hole in the hearts of her family, but her memory is a bright light that will shine through. Her life was decency personified and will serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Steeds.
Jennifer is survived by her parents, Martin and Ellen Steed, her sisters, Mary, Noreen and Bridget, her brothers-in-law, and many cherished and much-loved nieces and nephews. Jenn and the Steed family are forever grateful to the NYPD Family Assistance Unit for their tremendous support the past few years.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jennifer’s memory to Staten Island University Hospital: https://support.northwell.edu/

Dear Steed Family,
Please accept my most sincere condolences. I had the privilege of working with and getting to know Jennifer when we were both working in Human Resources at the NYPD. We were both promoted and didn’t see each other as frequently as we’d like but when we did, we had the best laughs and Jen told the best stories. I lived vicariously through her while she jet-setted the globe and swam the oceans deep. She was a brave, fierce and compassionate woman and friend. She never pulled any punches and was always honest and straightforward with me. That’s what made me respect her and love her even more. I spoke to Jen recently and even though she was tired, she was still fighting. I expected nothing less from this highly spirited woman. My heart breaks for your loss and for mine. I’ll be thinking of her on the 19th.

We had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer on a dive trip to Providenciales. We had a great time with Jennifer and she made an impact on our children’s lives when she shared her experiences about 9/11. I’m so sorry for Jennifer’s family’s loss. We only spent a short time with Jennifer, but we will always be grateful for her friendship.
