Beloved crossing guard at P.S. 20, loyal parishioner at Zion Lutheran Church and lifelong Port Richmond resident, ‘amazing and sociable’
Helen D. Kaufmann, 98, years old, died Thursday, Sept 29, 2016, at Eger Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past two years. She was born in Port Richmond, Staten Island, N.Y., and had lived in that community her whole life.
Helen was an extremely amazing and sociable woman and had many lifelong friends. She became friends with everyone she knew. She worked and loved being a crossing guard at PS 20 for over 35 years and became so well known in her neighborhood that they named her street “Helen Kaufmann Avenue.”
Helen’s life was dedicated to her church, Zion Lutheran Church in Westerleigh, S.I., and was so proud to become the eldest parishioner in her church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, and her grandson, Mark Hiby. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine J. Hiby and her son, Walter Kaufman, along with her grandchildren, Walter Jr. , Sandra Mannino and Eric Hiby. She was a proud great-grandmother of six and one great-great grandson.
Funeral will be from Cherubini-McInerny Funeral Home, 1289 Forest Avenue, PR (formerly Meislohn-Silvie), on Monday at 9:45 a.m. with services at the Zion Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery in Linden, N.J. The family will be receiving friends on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
