My sincere, deepest sympathy to Joel’s family. As I recall, Joel had a brother, sister-in-law and, I believe, two nephews. I worked with Joel at Seaview Hospital & Home/NYCHHC and knew him since 1986. He was the kindest, most thoughtful man I’ve ever known. Joel loved animals so much and volunteered his time to help feed & find homes for so many animals. I remember a time, while driving him home after work, when he jumped out of my car because he saw a medium sized dog running down the street. He picked up the dog and knocked on door after door until he found the home of that sweet dog that got out of their yard. He always had a kind word for people and went out of his way to be helpful. Joel was engaged to be married long ago but when his fiancee decided to move to California, Joel said I can’t leave my Dad. Joel’s Dad was widowed for many years and lived with him. His Dad pined away for his wife, who passed long before him, and Joel cared for him until his Dad passed. Joel loved his mother very much and I was honored when he gave me a print that he had bought for her. It hangs in my living room to this day. He loved his brother and nephews very much. Joel enjoyed family get-togethers and his sister-in-law’s cooking. Joel was a mentor & father figure to many young people through the years. He worked beyond the scope of his title for many years because he loved working in our Central Supply Dept. Unfortunately, Joel wasn’t recognized for the brilliant, resourceful work he performed but he didn’t mind and it never stopped him from contributing to the well-being of patients. Joel had a talent not many people were aware of, he considered himself a Medium. He came to my upstate house once and did tarot & palm readings. Everyone was impressed and wanted to know when he’d be coming back. I had, recently, been thinking we should do it again soon. I think of him often and miss his wit & his decent, funny jokes. I am saddened by his loss and regret that I didn’t have a chance to see him again. I was honored to know him as my colleague and friend. My heartfelt sympathy to all who knew and loved him. We’ll miss you, Joel.

Joel was the sweetest, gentlest man, kind to everyone and generous to a fault. You couldn’t ask for a more caring and compassionate true friend. He loved classic old movies, gardening, making people smile with silly jokes and puns. Everyone loved to get a loaf of his beloved banana bread. Even when his health failed, his dedication to others never did. We we always remember him with the deepest love and fondness. He was an incredibly special person and will be profoundly missed.
