I was saddened to hear of “Aunt” Joyce’s passing. My condolences to Sean and Meg and their families, as well as, Barbara’s family. She’s my Mother’s cousin, but I always thought of her as my Aunt. I have many fond memories of her and her family during my visits over the years. I was always welcome in her home during my years at Rutgers, as well as, the years before and after. I will miss her.

My mother’s was a life of love and great acheivement.
I remember her from my days in girl scouts. She was a leader with Collete Martin and they were affectionately known as Rowan & Martin, a well-known comedy duo. She was an antique dealer with her partner Alice Casey, a gourmet caterer with her partner Carmela Leverock, a fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Foundation with Teri Russo, a contributor to the Staten Island Council on the Arts working to establish the Botanical Gardens in its early days, an active member of Christ Church, later becaming a Boy Scout Leader for Troop XIX.
She loved helping people and would do anything for family and friends.
She will be missed. Rest in peace.

Sean, Meg and extended family,
Losing a parent leaves an empty hole in our lives and I feel for the sense of pain and loss you are going through. I am sad at her passing, and also sorry for the health issues that plaqued her late in life.
You were lucky to have Joyce in your lives, as was anyone who knew her. I have fond memories of visiting the Rowan house in my Scout and teenage years. It was always the place you looked forward to going to. Indeed Joyce and Ray were the cool parents and often the only parents that hung with you while you were visiting.
I remember taking Garde Manger classes at the Rowan house with the guys and what a time was had by all! Joyce was always a real “hoot,” quick to find the humor in the oddest situations and she was always quick to point out some underlying cheekiness in the conversations. We laughed and laughed and laughed!
I wish I could be there to celebrate her life and her gift for warming our hearts. Joyce was a great lady, a loving and caring individual. I know a smile will always come across my face when I think of her!
Thanks for the memories Joyce!
With love,
Janice

Sending condolences for the loss of your Mom, your Nana. I remember times when I was lucky to be included in a family activity; there was never a dull moment. Lots of fun and great food thanks to Joyce. She had the touch to make everyone in her home feel special, not to mention the best birthday parties (always with Aunt Doris’s help). I’m sure you are missing Barbara keenly at this time, and your Dad. My love and sympathy to you. Meg, your entry including your Mom’s accomplishments is beautiful.
Meg says
Thank you Mary Ann for sharing those beautiful memories. They really brought me back. Oh, those birthday parties! She was beloved by many. God Bless you
