‘Nurse of the Year’ at Willowbrook, beloved sister & aunt, 93 Miss Ruth E. Jones (93) of Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, died Friday, January 14th at the Eger Health and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
She was the daughter of Rev. George T. Jones and Jennie (Stoddard) Jones, both of Mariners Harbor. Ruth is preceded in death by older brother Paul H. & his wife June (Morris) Jones, and younger brother Philip G. Jones.
She is survived by younger brother Cornelius (Neil) and sister-in-law Ruth H. Jones, currently living in Monrovia, California, and sister-in-law Sharon (Berkman) Jones (widow of brother Philip) in Ft. Myers, Florida; nine nieces and nephews; and many grand, and great-grand nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her very much.
Ruth was born in and lived her entire life in the family home on Van Pelt Avenue, Mariners Harbor. She attended PS44 and graduated from Port Richmond High School, Class of 1946. Following the completion of her nursing training, she worked at Willowbrook Park State School until she retired, having twice received a Nurse of the Year Award, presented by the Governor of NY in Albany. Ruth was an active member of the Mariners Harbor Baptist Church and became a founding member of Willowbrook Park Baptist Church in 1964, when the two churches merged. She remained active in the church, especially in the Women’s Group and Missions Committee, until her death.
Ruth was passionate about visiting the sick and shut ins. During her retirement, she served with the local Salvation Army. She loved to cook and bake and was especially noted for her Jell-O salads. She also enjoyed gardening, weather watching, traveling, sewing, and crossword puzzles – especially Sudoku. In addition, Ruth was an avid NY Yankees fan!
Ruth will be missed for her wonderful ministry and her caring heart.
A Memorial Service will be held at Willowbrook Park Baptist Church, 1780 Richmond Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314, on Feb. 11, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, a reception will be held at the church. The Interment will be a private event, for the family only. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to Willowbrook Park Baptist Church or the Salvation Army in the Memory of Ruth E. Jones.
